Marketplace expansion in Central and Eastern Europe

Selling on foreign marketplaces: e-commerce expansion into CEE markets

Already selling in your home market and want to enter new countries? A marketplace is the cheapest way in: no company abroad, no shop built from scratch. We take you through platform and category choice, account, catalogue, logistics, campaigns and integrations - from the first decision to the first orders.

Is it for you?

When marketplace expansion makes sense

A marketplace pays off when you already have a product, sales and the readiness to adapt your range and prices to a new market. See if that is your situation.

  • You have a product and sales in your home market - in your own shop, on a local marketplace, in B2B, as a manufacturer or distributor - and want to add new countries.
  • You want to test a new market without a company abroad and without building a shop from scratch.
  • You already sell on eMAG.ro and want to add Hungary, Bulgaria or Trendyol as a second channel.
  • You run several sales channels and know that another market will not hold together without automation (OMS).
  • You sell on Allegro or Empik and want someone to run those channels too - we can help, although CEE markets are our speciality.
  • You have no shop or online presence yet - we also build shop platforms, but for a new market a marketplace is the cheaper first step.

If you sell as a private individual (classifieds, OLX), that is not our speciality. And one condition: recommendations on range and pricing have to be implemented - without that no marketplace will work.

How to start selling on a marketplace abroad

Selling through a marketplace differs from running your own shop abroad in one thing: the customer is already there. The platform provides payments, delivery, returns handling and buyer trust, while you bring the catalogue, the price and the logistics. That makes marketplace entry the fastest way to test a new market without investing in a shop, marketing and local support.

Starting on a marketplace does not require a company abroad. You open the account on your existing company and invoice and ship from home. What decides the result happens earlier: category choice, product cards and a margin calculated after commission and logistics.

Registration details and requirements per platform: how to start on eMAG, how to start on Trendyol and the guide eMAG seller account registration step by step.

What you need to start

  • A company registered in the EU - any legal form is fine.
  • An active EU VAT number.
  • The ability to deliver abroad and handle returns (the customer has at least 14 days to withdraw).
  • Company documents and a bank account for account verification.
  • Products compliant with the platform rules and EU law - labelling, documentation, EAN codes.
  • Someone who answers customer questions within the time the platform requires.
Step by step

Marketplace entry step by step: six stages

This is what a marketplace launch looks like when we run it with clients - from the category decision to the first campaigns.

01

Category and profitability analysis

We check demand, competition and price ranges in the category (market analysis) and calculate the margin after commission, logistics and currency conversion (calculator). This is where the decision is made whether and with what to enter.

02

Account registration and verification

We open the seller account on your company, collect the documents and pass verification. The platform usually needs a few working days.

03

Catalogue: cards, translations, attributes

We build product cards to the platform requirements: titles, descriptions, attributes, images, variants and EAN codes. Translations are checked by someone who knows the market, not just by a machine.

04

Prices per market, logistics and returns

We set prices separately for each market, configure delivery (your own shipping or the platform fulfilment) and the returns process.

05

Launch and first reviews

We activate the listings and watch shipping deadlines and customer replies - the account metrics from the first weeks decide how visible your listings are.

06

Campaigns and scaling

Once the catalogue and metrics are in order, we switch on eMAG ADS or Trendyol ADS campaigns and extend the range or add the next market.

Expansion

Selling abroad through marketplaces: e-commerce expansion without a company or a shop

E-commerce expansion through marketplaces is the lowest-cost way into a new market: no company to set up, no shop or brand to build from scratch, no traffic to buy in a foreign market. Exporting through a marketplace starts with an account, a catalogue and logistics - the platform provides the rest.

Cross-border selling has its own rules, though: VAT once you pass the threshold, returns from abroad, customer service in the local language and product requirements. We set them up once, before they start generating costs. We cover the Romanian market in depth in our Romanian e-commerce guide and the costs in how much it costs to sell on eMAG.

Markets we work on

We cover other European markets within long-term cooperation - in total we have worked on 9 markets.

Cross-border

Cross-border step by step: logistics, VAT, customer service

  • Shipping from your own warehouse in the EU. Couriers deliver to Romania quickly, including to parcel lockers, and returns come back to your warehouse.
  • Fulfilment by eMAG (FBE) as an option: the platform takes over storage, order handling and delivery, and the customer gets fast local shipping.
  • VAT: at first you settle VAT at your home country's rate. Once you pass 10,000 EUR of cross-border B2C sales in the EU, you move to the OSS scheme and the local rate (21% in Romania).
  • Customer service and returns stay with the seller - we put the process in order: reply templates, deadlines, the complaints path, so the account metrics do not slip.
  • Product requirements: we check labelling, documentation and compliance with the platform rules before publication, not after a listing gets rejected.

Integrations and OMS. Another market means more orders, stock levels and prices to keep track of. We connect the marketplace to your system through BaseLinker, Apilo or easySales, and where standard integrations are not enough, we write our own modules. More: automation and OMS implementations.

Choosing a platform

Which foreign marketplace to choose? eMAG, Trendyol or another market

Which marketplace to choose is not decided by fashion but by three things: the category and how much room is left in it, the margin after commission and logistics costs, and how ready your catalogue is. Below is a comparison of the two platforms we start with most often. If you are also weighing the Polish market, read our Allegro vs eMAG comparison.

eMAG Trendyol
Markets Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria from one account (Cross-Border) Romania
Categories Broad range: home and garden, appliances, automotive, kids, electronics, beauty Fashion, footwear, accessories, lifestyle, home
Commission Depends on the category, usually 7-25% Charged on the gross price, rates depend on the category
Logistics Your own shipping from the EU or Fulfilment by eMAG Your own shipping, returns organised by the seller
Typical mistakes at the start Incomplete product cards, validation errors, prices with no margin after commission Unverified machine translation, neglected seller scoring
Start here if You have a broad range and a plan for three markets You sell fashion or lifestyle, or need a second channel in Romania

Trendyol rates are described in Trendyol commissions 2026. Fashion Days and further markets are chosen after a call - depending on the category and the scale you already have.

Criteria

Five selection criteria

  • Demand and competition in the category - the market analysis shows the listing sorted five ways: who sells, at what prices and with what reviews (how to assess category potential).
  • Margin after commission and delivery and return costs - calculated in the profitability calculators before the first product is listed.
  • Catalogue and translation readiness - how many cards have to be built from scratch and how many can be carried over from current sales.
  • Logistics and returns - delivery time, the cost of a return from abroad, the platform fulfilment option.
  • Time to the first reviews - an account with no seller history needs patience; check where you will earn them faster.
Cooperation

What cooperation looks like when entering a new market

Three stages - the same ones we run on every account, laid out for expansion.

01

Account audit + needs assessment

We analyse the range, current sales, the category potential on the target market and what is missing for launch. Within 5 days of your enquiry you receive an audit with ready-to-use recommendations.

02

Strategy + implementation

The entry plan: platform, categories, prices per market. Then the work on the account - registration and verification (a few days), catalogue, logistics, first campaigns.

03

Education + scaling

We report what changed and why, train your team on the platform and add further markets or channels. The minimum cooperation period is 3 months - that is how long it realistically takes to see results.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about selling on foreign marketplaces

No. On eMAG and Trendyol you open the seller account on a company registered in any EU country with an active EU VAT number. You invoice and ship from home.

At first at your home country's rate. Once you pass 10,000 EUR of cross-border B2C sales in the EU, you move to the OSS scheme and settle VAT at the consumer country's rate (21% in Romania). We tell you what to set up and when; your accountant runs the returns.

It depends on the category. eMAG has a broader range and three markets from one account, Trendyol is strong in fashion and lifestyle and works well as a second channel in Romania. When in doubt, a market analysis for your category settles it.

The main costs are the sales commission (on eMAG usually 7-25% depending on the category), logistics with returns and the work on the catalogue. Our packages start from 250 EUR one-off for a consultation and audit; we do not require a minimum campaign budget. Details on the pricing page.

You receive the audit with recommendations within 5 days of your enquiry, platform verification takes a few days, and building the catalogue depends on the number of products. For sales results we assume a minimum of 3 months of cooperation - that is what it realistically takes.

From your own warehouse in the EU - couriers deliver to Romania quickly, including to parcel lockers, and returns come back to you. The alternative is Fulfilment by eMAG, where the platform takes over storage, delivery and returns.

Yes. The eMAG Cross-Border programme lets you sell in Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria from one account - that is how the automotive two-markets case and the three-sales-channels case work. Prices and the catalogue are set separately for each country.

Product cards must be in the language of the market. Unverified machine translation is one of the most common mistakes at the start - it lowers conversion and can get a listing rejected. Our translations are checked by someone who knows the market.

A marketplace gives you ready traffic, payments, delivery and customer trust - you do not build a brand from scratch. In return you pay a commission and play by the platform rules: account metrics, deadlines, card format. For most sellers it is the cheapest test of a new market. If you also need your own shop, we build shop platforms too - but for a new market a marketplace is the cheaper first step.

Yes. We run Allegro and Empik (Poland) as complementary channels - most often for clients entering eMAG or Trendyol at the same time. Our speciality is Central and Eastern Europe, so if you are only interested in another marketplace, we will tell you honestly whether we have something to offer.

Yes. We implement BaseLinker, Apilo and easySales, and when a standard integration is not enough, we write our own modules - synchronising stock, prices and orders between the shop, the ERP and the marketplace.
